It’s been a hot minute since I last posted. Two out-of-state moves in between this post and the last post will do that! It’s ironic that the last time I posted was for my dear friend Jemima Flendt’s first book, Weekend Quilting, and now this post is for her second book, Quilt Big.

Quilt Big is a clever book. We never have enough time to create all the quilts we want to make, and Jemima understands, that by upsizing our blocks, we can knock out full quilts in half the time. She has put a lot of thought into creating a book filled with quilt blocks and designs that will appeal to all styles and quilting abilities.

When it came time to choose what I was going to make, I was drawn to the String Block Pillow. It’s been years since I’ve done any strip piecing. I was originally thinking I’d use a jelly roll to make the work even simpler, but I was really craving a handpicked rainbow made of Liberty of London. I had planned on making a full size pillow (24″), but knew that my darling girls would fight about who would get to use it on her bed. So, in a late night flash of genius (ha) I decided to turn it into two pillows – bolsters for their beds.

I am so happy with how these turned out. They were so quick to make – you can’t beat quilting-as-you-go and the pop of color really stands out on their white quilts. I decided on a simple envelope closure for the back, and serged it all together. I used just a simple pink petite dot from SevenBerry (Robert Kaufman). My girls are smitten with their new pillows, and I am thrilled to have a book full of quick makes for when I’m short on time or just wanting a good return on my time investment.

I am so excited to be a part of this showcase.  Jemima Flendt (@tiedwitharibbon) is a dear friend of mine, and I remember emailing back and forth when her book was just in the most beginning stage.  What a joy it is for me to see it come to life.  Jemima is such a talented and kind person, and her warmth is translated perfectly in her debut book, Weekend Quilting, released by Fons and Porter (@fonsandporter).  The abundance of approachable and fun projects made picking only one very tough!

We were in the middle of selling our home and moving when we were choosing our dates, so I made this mini months ago, as not to be stressed if I couldn’t unpack in time or located all my necessities before my showcase date was up.  The book proved its title – I made this mini in a weekend, between all of the other things going on.  I’d just pop in to my sewing room as time allowed, and thoroughly enjoyed watching it come together.

I chose the Sparkles Mini Quilt, and used some of my all time favorite prints from Yuwa, Lecien, Sevenberry, Art Gallery and Moda.  Because each piece is on the small side, I stuck with smaller prints so that they could really shine.  I don’t normally keep many low volume prints on hand, but I do love dots, so those got put to good use here.  To save time, I selected all my fabric ahead of time, and calculated how many A pieces I would need, and how many B. Then I cut enough fabric squares of each and just went to work picking as I sewed.  Its nice that you can play around with the final layout quite a bit before the whole mini is sewn together.

Jemima wrote out fantastic instructions. The projects are laid out in a logical way, organized way based on the technique you’re wanting to try.  The projects are approachable and beautiful, and this will a book I turn to often for lessons and inspiration.

Hand quilted within the low volume triangles, and then machine bound to finish. This is a charity quiltalong hosted by Fat Quarter Shop to raise money for the Make a Wish Foundation; their sole mission is to grant tremendous and memorable wishes to kids with terminal or chronic illness.The quilt was designed by Camille Roskelly and 坚果加速器下载官网, and I’m continuing to use their newly released line, Basics, for this quilt, and for now am going in color order – we’ll see what happens when I run out of colors!

This month’s block is called Homestead and can be downloaded HERE.  Fat Quarter Shop is releasing these patterns for free, though our sincere hope is that you’ll consider donating just $5 for each pattern you download.  If you’d like to donate, you can do so HERE. This month’s chosen color is green, and I think these prints really shine in this block!

Hi everyone! Welcome to my stop on the Made for Baby blog tour! I’ve been a long time fan of Ayda Algin’s and when I first heard that she was writing a book, I knew without a doubt that it would be an incredible source of inspiration and instruction.  I have some close friends that are soon to deliver baby boys, and I’m thrilled to have so many beautiful baby projects to choose from.

Having two girls of my own, I am well stocked in girly prints, but I don’t have much in the way of boyish color schemes.  I used some precious Liberty of London and a favorite, ultra soft blue gingham, along with and a few low volume prints to create a soft boyish, scrappy feel, and am completely smitten with how these turned out!

I chose to make two projects from her book – the Chime Bears and the Teething Rings.  Because I’ve got one friend that just delivered, and another with a little boy on the way very soon, I decided to double up and made two of each.

I loved how easily and simply these projects came together.  I can’t get over how cute the addition of the bowtie is! Its the sweetest little detail that makes this feel so perfect for a baby boy.  I love that this pattern has such a classic, retro feel to it.  I bought a bag of bells and stuffed two into each bear to ensure enough chime, as often it can become quite muted within all the stuffing.  I decided to omit the embroidery for the arms, as I wanted to keep these bears very simple since they would be paired with busier teething rings.

I sewed small pieces of velcro to the ribbon that secures the ring to the star, instead of the snaps that Ayda recommends.  We are about to move and I’ve already packed up my snap press – but I wanted to still give the moms the chance to remove it so it could be washed, without having to wash the wooden ring.  The velcro worked perfectly, as these stars are super light weight.

I love how they turned out, and I hope these gifts are well loved by both mom and baby!

Good morning everyone! I’m excited to share with you what I’ve made for my stop on the Art Gallery Fabrics Fusions and Capsules Blog Tour!  Mathew Boudreaux (@MisterDomestic) came up with a killer lineup of talent, and I’m very honored to be on the list.  I’m sewing with the 坚果加速器app官网 capsule, and I love how vibrant and cheerful it is – perfect for what I had in mind.  These colors make me think of Spring, joy, hope, optimism, and vitality.

I wanted to be sure I made something worthy of such a great showcase, so I chose to make a quilt for someone that could use some sunshine.  A friend of mine is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and I wanted to make her a quilt to comfort her during her appointments, and any time she could use a hug or encouragement.

But, in the end, I realized I needed to pick something that wasn’t so long (as I would still be piecing the letters long after her treatments were completed).  I decided on the classic “SHE BELIEVED SHE COULD SO SHE DID” quote, because I wanted something equally as empowering and uplifting to the one above, just with fewer letters.

I sketched the layout to be sure all the letters would fit.  I used the 6 inch “My First Alphabet” paper piecing pattern by From Blank Pages for the letters – I love how easy they are to read.  I wanted wonky stars surrounding it and chose to use the FREE(!) Confetti Star paper pieced pattern by During Quiet Time.

The “To Live by Joyful” print by Sew Caroline, and is filled with inspiring and warm words, and I included a few scattered throughout the quilt.

Once the top was done, I pieced the backing using a pattern matching technique that my friend Erin @mommy2lu shared, and it works like a charm!  This gorgeous print, called “Orchard Bloosom Joyful”, by @BonnieChristine was the perfect choice for a single print backing, and I thought a nice, busier, contrast to the simpler quilt front.

Then it was ready to send off to one of my closest friends, Sarah Russett (@OnConnorsHill) to be quilted and she used an orange peel design that worked so perfectly with the fresh, crisp, and clean vibe of this quilt. She did an awesome job and I’m so grateful to have had her help and generosity infused in this quilt!

This quilt finishes at roughly 58″ x 64″ – perfect to use as a throw!  I love all the white space (AGF Pure Elements Snow) because it feels so bright and clean.  I wanted the message and colors to stand out, and I think that was achieved! I prefer to machine bind – I’ve found it to be far more durable – and used the “Script Joyful” print.

My friend now has the quilt in her hands and I hope it brings her much comfort!

Hi everyone! Welcome to week five of the Happy Flower Quiltalong!  This week’s template block provided a challenge for me! I am no stranger to Y seams, but when you’re working with small pieces, shifting can certainly happen and make a big difference in the block overall.

I think the block turned out great overall, but it was certainly a challenge! How did you manage with it?

As for the applique block, the flower is supposed to be a Lily of the Valley – and those are usually white.  But I’m really enjoying my light backgrounds for these needle-turn blocks so I just decided to go with it! I’m still a little undecided for that center leaf, but I think when the entire quilt is laid out it won’t make much of a difference.  And I can always change it at the end if I feel strongly about it!
